Our Long National Nightmare Continues: Trump & Congress

In November 2016, I wrote an Op-ed that was titled “Our Long National Nightmare is Almost Over.” It was a cry to encourage the reader to get out and vote for Hillary Clinton and despite all her faults imagined or otherwise, she would have governed a hell of a lot better than the current occupier of the White House.

One year later, the anniversary of the presidential election of Donald Trump our government is now “Shut Down” (at Whirl press deadline), due to his inability to broker any trust between both Republicans and Democrats. Because his heart is not into it; and he can’t keep his agreed to word.

One year later his presidency is met with protest by thousands of women, men and children who are sending a message that he and his party have lost the confidence of the majority of the citizens of America and the world.

Civil War of Words and Deeds: One year later the Republican party now holds the majority control of the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives yet in a year’s time they did nothing for the middle class and chose to continue in hurting the lives of the less fortunate and erasing laws that protected the common man, woman, child, animals and the environment.

Why is it whenever Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are summoned to the White House with some alleged attempt to broker a bipartisan deal he and his party fake them out like Lucy does to Charlie Brown with the football. Google, it.

The two major issues being discussed during the shutdown CHIP and DACCA both were going to be funded.  September 2017, Trump promised to work on the debt ceiling in December, he promised to Chuck and Nancy he would sign a bill to keep the government open. This angered his base, hardline Republicans will not budge and offer very little compassion or care for the needy case in point -- the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“The Children’s Health Insurance Program is a cheap, successful program that provides health care coverage to 9 million low- and middle-income children. Its budget expired 110 days ago — and Republicans in Congress have done next to nothing about it” Vox Online

The majority of Republicans in congress could have included funding for Chip for 5 to ten years in their tax reform budget that will cost 1.5 trillion dollars, it was purposely left out to be used as a hostage during the debt ceiling debate over the funding for Trumps wall.

Immigration Reform (DACA) was addressed years ago and a bill was worked on and offered but Republican leadership refused to act on the bill and it died, sabotaging any hopes of getting a deal while Republicans hold leadership in congress.

The 2013 bipartisan deal was agreed to by what is commonly called the Gang of Eight included four Democrats and four Republicans who worked together to offer a solution to the immigration issue, but it was rejected because it would have been a positive for Obama.

Trump decided to reverse the Obama DACA program that allowed children students who were brought to America as babies or children to remain here, he first said “yes,” they could stay in June and changed his mind by August.

Polls show most Americans agree with allowing the students to remain in the country because this is the only country they know; reality is most undocumented are those who over stay their visas from Europe, Asia, Canada.

Now the Republican party is using a racist vial ad to paint all Latino Dreamers as potential killers, and terrorist, which lets the Latino Americans know where they stand with the Republican Party.

It Is no secret the current administration is in capable of governing the current Republican leadership who always touts about love of military in front of the camera just refused to help the military when Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) tried to pass a bill guaranteeing military pay and death benefits during the gov’t shutdown.

GOP leader Mitch McConnell blocked it and refused to allow our brave men and women to receive their pay.

Claire McCaskill:

“MISSOURI. MRS. McCaskill: MR. PRESIDENT, THIS SHOULDN'T TAKE LONG. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN THE PRESIDENT PUT OUT A STATEMENT THAT TRIED TO DIVIDE US BASED ON PARTY WHEN IT CAME TO THE SUPPORT OF OUR MILITARY. THERE IS NO SUCH DIVISION. EVERYONE IN THIS CHAMBER KNOWS IT, AND SO AS WE HAVE IN OTHER INSTANCES WHEN WE HAD A SHUT DOWN, I REMEMBER IN 2013, WE DID THIS RIGHT OFF THE BAT, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE SEND A VERY CLEAR SIGNAL THAT WE DON'T WANT ANY MOMENT TO PASS WITH THERE BEING ANY UNCERTAINTY WITH ANY SOLDIER ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD THAT THEY WILL BE PAID FOR THE VALIANT WORK THAT THEY DO ON BEHALF OF OUR NATIONAL SECURITY. UNANIMOUS CONSENT -- I ASK UNANIMOUS CONSENT THAT THE SENATE PROCEED TO THE IMMEDIATE CONSIDERATION OF CALENDAR NUMBER 36, H.R. 1301, THAT THE AMENDMENT AT THE DESK PROVIDING FOR CONTINUING APPROPRIATIONS FOR PAY AND FOR DEATH BENEFITS BE AGREED TO, THE BILL BE CONSIDERED AND READ A THIRD TIME AND PASSED THE MOTIONS TO RECONSIDER BE CONSIDERED MADE AND LAID UPON THE TABLE WITH NO INTERVENING ACTION OR DEBATE”.

Mitch Mc Connell said “No” and he objected.

America has always been a nation that other nations looked for strong moral leadership in the world, but now they are questioning our sanity; and if we are capable of being the shining light on a hill.
