As moviegoers prepare for the opening day of the latest winter box office battle between Marvel (Disney) and DC Comics (Warner Bros), it is clear that the poor summer box office returns have some in the industry a bit squeamish regarding what to expect in the fall and winter film season. Comic book films have now become the savior of Hollywood, and to the disdain of movie critics and film purists over sixty, superhero action films have become a necessary evil that assures Hollywood will have a successful box office season

. The upcoming fall and winter box office for 2017-2018 will be a battle between four giant franchises Disney vs. Warner Brothers and Marvel vs. DC starting with the November 3rd release of Marvels ‘’Thor Ragnarok’’ and a few weeks later DC will release “Justice League” on November 17th there will be some carry over the competition.

In this Corner “Thor Ragnarok.” According to the online film and television review site Rotten Tomatoes, “Thor Ragnarock” scored a 95% on the Tomato-meter, and a 99% want to see it, critics are not panning this film. In fact, they deem it to be better than many other Marvel films. The Hollywood buzz is Ragnarok is not a bad film it is deemed to be the better of all the previous Thor movies. Rotten Tomatoes describes this latest addition to the franchise " Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer (Mjolnir) Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok.

Ragnarok is the Norse god’s version of the end of the world similar to the Christian Armageddon; it is the "Twilight of the gods." The purpose of Asgard is at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela, the goddess of death, played by (Cate Blanchett).

Hela has been locked away in a type of purgatory by the king of the gods, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) she escapes and is seeking vengeance, she teams up with Skurge, the Executioner, played by Karl Urban.

Before Thor can help his father (Odin) reclaim his throne, he's captured by a band of marauders, led by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) who puts him in a gladiators pit to fight the champion of all the gladiators his former ally and fellow Avenger--the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)

The battle takes place under the watchful eye of both Thor’s half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Idris Elba as Heimdall and Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange round out the top players. The “Warriors Three” Volstagg played by Ray Stevenson, Hogun Tadanobu Asano, and Fandral played by Zachery Levi, noted Thor love interest the Lady Sif Jaimie Alexander did not appear in the film due to scheduling conflict each will play a minor role but will fight for the Glory of Asgard.

Unlike Thor and Thor the Dark World, this film takes a much lighter note, similar to the Guardians of the Galaxy, humor, and action will be the driving force of the film.

The best thing missing from this film is the (why am I here?) Natalie Portman who played Thor’s Midgard ( Earth )  lover, in the prior two films, Portman was so out of place; it was painful to watch.

Like most Marvel films there will most assuredly be a tie into future Marvel films such as the Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War part 1. Thor’s interaction between the three world’s or dimensions such as Asgard, Sakkar, and Earth is laced with color and humor with an exciting soundtrack to boot. Thor Ragnarok deems to be a well-liked Marvel film that may carry the fall/winter action films into a better financial dimension. As of this printing “Thor Ragnarock” has made over 502 million dollars in just two weeks at the box office.

In This Corner “Justice League”

The early buzz on Justice League is the film is being well received by early reviews and it has been a long-awaited movie that was talked in Hollywood circles for decades. Social media is chomping at the bit to describe the film to the upcoming audience before its November 17th release.

The film is the part two to Batman Vs Superman, and in Warner Bros attempt to carry over storylines from different DC Super Hero films similar to Disney and their Marvel characters Forbes contributing writer Mark Hughes describes the film arches as this.

“Man of Steel received majority-positive reviews when it released in 2013, but overall reactions were still mixed and it finished with a less-than-expected $668 million in theaters. Batman v Superman notoriously faced a wave of heated negative critical reception and luke-warm audience sentiment, although none of that prevented it from topping $873 million in global receipts. Suicide Squad, despite last-minute reworking to respond to some of the complaints about Batman v Superman, wound up with terrible reviews but still overperformed at the box office to the tune of $745 million.”

Justice League’ stars Ben Affleck returning to his role as Batman, Gil Gadot in her third appearance as Wonder Woman, the famously loved Jason Mamoa, as Aquaman, Henry Cavill is Superman, Ezra Miller, The Flash, and Ray Fisher Cyborg.

The film is expected to gross in the 900 million range worldwide but with Thor Ragnorock, already off to a good head start Disney/Marvel will be a tough competitor.
